Dimitrieska-Kochoska: We maintain our steadfast commitment to accountable and disciplined public finance management

30th April 2026, Skopje – Ministry of Finance remains steadfastly committed to building a more resilient, stable and efficient public finance management system. Improving the fiscal framework supports economic stability and underpins the country’s long-term development, Minister of Finance highlighted during expert debate on the topic “Public Finance Efficiency and Fiscal Rules Role in North Macedonia”, organized by the Fiscal Council.

“Contemporary public finance management requires a long-term vision, clear rules, and institutional stability, allowing for predictability, discipline, and accountability in decision-making. Fiscal policy in the coming period will face the complex challenge of balancing consolidation and development needs. Therefore, prudent management, sound institutions, and consistent application of fiscal rules are essential,” the Minister highlighted.

She emphasized that today’s debate takes place amid the adoption of the 2027–2031 Fiscal Strategy, a central framework for the management of public finances in the medium term.

“This Strategy is a result of the firm commitment to accountable and disciplined public finance management amid heightened global risks, energy instability, and the need to preserve macroeconomic stability. Its objective is to provide a stable and predictable fiscal course, without disrupting economic activity and social security of the citizens,” Dimitrieska-Kochoska said, adding that the Strategy envisages a gradual reduction of budget deficit to a 2.8% target by 2031.

This, she said, represents a clear signal of commitment to gradual fiscal consolidation and alignment with European fiscal standards, as well as strengthening the credibility of the fiscal policy.

She noted that the Government will pursue these objectives through continued measures on both revenue and expenditure side, thus ensuring sustainable, efficient, and more transparent public finance management.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the Fiscal Council in shaping fiscal policy through its analyses and opinions.

“The Ministry of Finance recognizes this Fiscal Council’s role as an important component of partnership in the fiscal policy-making process. Independent expertise and critical analysis contribute to more informed, higher-quality, and more sustainable policy decision-making,” Minister of Finance, Gordana Dimitrieska-Kochoska, underscored.
