22nd March 2023, Skopje – European Investment Bank has financed projects amounting to EUR 1.16 billion in our country. These projects are of crucial significance for the public sector in the Republic of North Macedonia, however, the support extended for the private sector is also important, which is expected to continue in future as well, as indicated at today’s meeting between Minister of Finance, Fatmir Besimi, and Vice President of the European Investment Bank, Lilyana Pavlova.

“Government of the Republic of North Macedonia is committed to attaining accelerated economic growth, enhanced infrastructure, environment protection, as well as energy transition and generation of clean green energy. These are the areas, wherefore the support extended by the European Investment Bank as our partner, is crucial, investing EUR 635 million as cheap loans, intended for small- and medium-sized enterprises, support for investments and working capital, EUR 277 million as projects in the transport sector aimed at improving the road safety, as well as shortening the travel time, EUR 178 million aimed at the water supply infrastructure, improved access to drinking water and sanitary services for the citizens, as well as EUR 64 million in energy projects,” Minister Besimi said.

He went on that EIB is currently participating in implementing public sector projects with EUR 230 million, also including today’s signing of the Agreement pertaining to the Wastewater Treatment Station Plant Skopje.

Minister also pointed out the crucial significance of the support EIB extended for small-and medium-sized enterprises, which will continue in future as well. Minister thereby said that new tranche amounting to EUR 100 million is expected, as cheap loans form EIB, intended for small- and medium-size enterprises, as well as green transition.

The Projects, which are realized in our country and financially supported by EIB, are Greece – North Macedonia Gas Interconnector Project, Rail Corridor 8 towards Bulgaria, Kriva Palanka – Bulgarian Border Road, Municipal Water Infrastructure Project, with the Bank also expressing interest in financing the Project for Construction of New Railway on Corridor VIII, Section Kichevo- Struga.
