13th April 2023, Washington – Implementation of major public projects in the field of road and railway infrastructure, energy, as well as environment protection are the top priorities of the Government and the Ministry of Finance. Therefore, EUR 800 million are projected in this year’s Budget as capital expenditures, being by almost twice higher compared to last year, whereby plenty of projects have been launched, for which in addition to the Budget funds, financial resources are also provided from international financial creditors. Opportunities for providing financial resources intended for the projects the Government implements, were points of discussion at the meeting held between Minister of Finance Fatmir Besimi and Reta Jo Lewis, EXIM’s President and Chair of the Board of Directors, being also attended by the Deputy Vice President Rita Murrell and Ufo Eric Atuanya, Senior Vice President.

“It is a matter of strategic infrastructure projects, being implemented for many years, as a significant driving force of the economy, thus contributing to the economic development of our country, aspiring to become EU Member State. Substantial project investment cycle will follow, covering not only the road and railway infrastructure, but also the health and education sectors, the digitalization, the innovations, the green investments and similar. Moreover, apart from the Budget funds, implementation of the adopted Government’s Growth Acceleration Plan is expected to boost the private investments, which are altogether estimated at approximately EUR 12 billion,” Minister Besimi said.

He also touched upon the specific projects implemented in our country, their financial scheme, as well as the supporters thereof, such as World Bank, EBRD, EIB, KfW, UNDP, EU Funds and similar. Thereby, he pointed out that public project portfolio, being funded by the international financial institutions, is estimated at around EUR seven billion in the upcoming 7-year period. He also mentioned the ongoing activities aimed at successful project implementation.

Minister of Finance, Fatmir Besimi, as part of the visit to the USA, will also meet the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and he will also take part in the WB and IMF Spring Meetings.
