15th August 2023, Skopje – Minister of Finance, Fatmir Besimi became a full-fledged member of the global Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action on Tuesday. This Coalition is a global initiative, which brings together finance ministers from 90 countries and representatives from 26 institutional partners.
Coalition was launched in April 2019, for the purpose of coordinating the activities of the Finance Ministers in support of observance of the obligations undertaken under the Paris Climate Agreement and the Helsinki Principles. Coalition’s mission is fully compatible with the 2022-2026 Accelerated Growth Plan, with the environment protection, along with the climate action, being one of the priority areas therein, as well as the 2023-2025 Fiscal Strategy with prospects until 2017, the 2023-2025 Economic Reform Programme and other strategic documents of the Government and the Ministry of Finance.
Climate change is a reality, whereby floods, draughts, fires and other natural disasters require putting functional systems on prevention and management in place, which should be continuously incorporated in the budget process. In addition, Coalition is aimed at encouraging green transition via, among the other, greater usage of the renewable sources of energy and increased protection of affected citizens and companies. At the same time, the Coalition is in charge of coordinated response by Finance Ministers, through scaled-up public investments and mobilization of substantial private capital to increase adaptability and resilience to climate change. Member countries of the Coalition represent 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 66% of global GDP.
