10th September 2020, Skopje – Minister of Finance Fatmir Besimi met EBRD Head of North Macedonia, Andi Aranitasi.

The discussions at the meeting focused on the mutual cooperation between the Ministry of Finance and EBRD in the recent years, as evident from the support provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the ongoing and the upcoming projects, the implementation of which will have an impact on the economic growth.

At present, greatest support is provided for implementing projects in the transportation sector, i.e. the road and railway infrastructure and the air transport, as well as in the field of energy infrastructure.

Deve Bair Border Crossing – Kriva Palanka Road Section Project, Railway Corridor VIII Project, Phase II– Section Beljakovce- Kriva Palanka, as well as the Wastewater Treatment Plant Skopje Project are among those. Construction of Motorway Section Skopje – Blace should be realized in future, and discussions are also being held for the Construction of the Motorway Section Kicevo- Gostivar.

At the meeting, Minister Besimi stressed that was crucial for this period was to quickly resolve the issues the line institutions face, being in charge of the project implementation, which would provide for boosting the economy.

The realization of the already commenced projects will be of great importance for intensifying the economic growth in times of pandemic, as well as improving the infrastructure, which will have a positive economic impact in the long run. We should take advantage of EBRD support and find a way to overcome all issues the institutions face when implementing some of the existing projects. By realizing the projects, better conditions for the economic entities will be provided, thus becoming more competitive on the market. At the same time, the implementation of capital projects provides for job creation for hundreds of domestic companies, as well as increased employment in the filed of construction – Besimi pointed out.

Director Andi Aranatis expressed, on behalf of EBRD, congratulations to Mr. Fatmir Besimi, on his election as Minister and wished him success and prosperity. At the same time, he underlined that EBRD would continue to provide its support in the future period as well, thus looking forward to faster boosting of the economy.
