31st January 2022, Skopje – Today, Ministry of Finance announced the data on the general government debt and the public debt as of 31st December 2021 inclusive. According to the data announced, public debt accounted for 60.9% of GDP as of 31st December 2021 inclusive.

It is maintained at stable level. Amid crisis which lasts for two years now, and the energy crisis we faced in Q4 2021, policies and measures undertaken contributed for the level of public debt to drop at end-2021 compared to 2020. At the end of 2021, public debt decreased by 0.1 p.p. compared to end-2020, declining by 3.8 p.p. in Q3 in relation to the previous quarter.

We remain committed to positioning the public debt below the Maastricht criterion of 60% of GDP, hence, in line with the Public Debt Management Strategy, it should account for 57.7% of GDP in 2026.

Ministry of Finance announces data on public debt quarterly, with general government debt data on monthly basis. According to the latest data, general government debt accounted for 51.9% of GDP on 31st December 2021.
